GOOD DAY Mr/Ms!๐
Welcome to our blog!
-Our blog contains tips on how to be a reponsible social media user! enjoy! :)
Hello again!
Thank you for waiting for me to get the ball rolling properly with my blog!
Letโs get started with a brief description of social media and what it actually is.
Social media could be simply described as โmedia (communication tools) that enable social interaction either over the web or via mobile devices.โ
The term itself โ social media โ and a quick google search will show that it is actually a much broader topic than just the above though! Social media has now come to encompass not just the actual means of communicating, but also the theories, techniques and strategies that it can be used for from a business context.I like to think of it though as a modern way of using traditional skills to communicate.
โPeople like to talkโ, which explains why social media has become such a big topic, especially when looking at its use for recruitment and marketing. You can reach a massive audience in a simple and efficient way! Gone are the days of having to send junk letters through the post (snail mail!) or even by pigeon! You can now leverage the massive amount of interaction that is happening on the internet every day and get your message across in a laser targetted way.Iโll be going into how this can be done much later, but for now, we just need to remember that it is โmassive, focussed and quickโ!
There are 8 different types of social media at the moment and no doubt youโll use some, if not all of these on a a daily basis:
- Social networks (Facebook,Instagram)
- Microblogging (Twitter)
- Blogs (WordPress)
- Content communities (YouTube, Pinterest)
- Podcasts (iTunes,Spotify)
- Forums as with blogs, far too many to list, but all are specific to a niche
- Wikis e.g. communal encyclopedia type sites, self edited
- Email (not usually included, but itโs still a massive communication tool)Although these are all different in format, they are all about human interaction (communication and โengagementโ) and sharing content (information). When you start learning and reading about social media, youโll keep coming across this buzz word, โengagementโ and no-one really seems to put a proper meaning to it!I feel itโs time that someone commits to a decision and shares the meaning, from a social media perspective on exactly what this term is!Now, I'll give you some tips on how to be a Responsible Social Media User.Four(4) Tips for Social Media Use.โ Keep your profiles set to private - As a general rule of thumb, it is good practice to keep your social media profiles and accounts set to private.โ Avoid posting unprofessional photos or statements. View your social media accounts through the lens of an employer and adjust the contents of your account accordingly.โ Do not post your whereabouts. While it can be tempting to post vacation photos or photos while out and about on the town, doing so tells everyone with access to your social media accounts that your house is unoccupied and could invite a thief to come to your house during this time.โ Think twice before posting in an emotional state. Although it can feel therapeutic in the moment, making a social media post in anger can have repercussions long after the statement is made.
With the touch of a screen, the click of a mouse, we can interact with somebody from a different country, stream live footage to relatives, or delight our friends with pictures and statuses. We live in a technologically-advanced society, with everything accessible to us. Anybody with opposable thumbs can record, communicate, and stream pretty much anything.
Being a responsible social media user starts from childhood.
Kids nowadays grow up having access to social media. As such, they can be more savvy than adults. So it is the responsibility of parents and guardians to teach them how to use social media properly. They should guide their kids to develop sound judgment and use social media securely.
Of course, everyone should be mindful of the things that we post online. One of the big no-noโs is to post your daily routine. Those with bad intentions can easily make use of such intimate information.
Another social media abuse is cyberbullying. A lot of social media user are cyberbullied because of the information that they posted online.
Cyberbullying is a form of harassment that occurs in the web. On Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or some other online networking outlet, it requires just a little push to badger somebody.
Thatโs the reason why every accounts we have in any social networking site should be safe and private.
